Wesak celebrations 2012

Though we were quite dormant during the wesak festivals last year, my father made it sure that this time it will not be so. However this article is not a description of i spent my wesak day as it would be no use to any other, but to note down a few observations that i thought important.

For those who are not familiar with buddhism, wesak full moon poya day basically stands out for three important events in lord buddhas life, that is his birth, enlightenment, and maha parinirvana or passing away. Buddhist around the world celebrate this day by occupying themselves in religious activities. such as observing sil, giving away alms and also participating in dhamma discussions and sermons.

one of the arguments that had been on air in the post wesak week was the criticism by some "eminent" buddhist , who have based themselves in colombo and its suburbs. in simple what they say is that the popular religious activities which draw large crowds does not align with the basic principles of buddhism. It was never the intent of lord buddah to have command over huge body of disciples. His "buddha sasana" was open to anyone who had the enthusiasm and the intelligence to understand it. therefore it is better to try and understand dhamma rather than engaging in huge tamashas that is there in the name of "maha pooja".

At a glance, anybody who is familiar with the basic teachings of buddhism will understand that this argument stands true. It teaches that all earthly pleasures cause sorrow, birth causes sorrow and the only way to break the cycle , iis to get rid of "thanha" or of attachments.

But what most of these "pundits" have forgotten is that there is something called a buddhist society. Imagine that a century ago, what they preached happened. that is, people saw how pointless it is to organize large scale religous activities , which drew thousands of buddhists from all over the land, and everybody went to temple , learnt dhamma and meditated and after years of doing this, and they eventually passed away. My argument is that if things were like hat we would have never had buddhism not more than several decades.

in order for buddhism to prevail as an organized religion , it is important to construct a buddhist society. in order for a buddhist society to be built there should be a calling for all buddhist to unite. And that is were all the crowd gathering huge scale activities are important. Imagine we didnt have dalada perahara (procession of the temple of the tooth), imagine what a void it would create. i believe that large scale pinkamas and wesak celebrations are a must and an important catalyst in the upliftment of a srilankan society. the west also has buddhist temples and buddhists. But how many of the people in the west know about the true value of buddhism, it had been confined only to the eager ones who went in search of it. Had there been an attempt to create a buddhist community in the western world, the message of lord buddah might have reached to every nook and corner.

So i believe it is not the duty of these pundits to ridicule these large scale activities, but to encourage them and ofcourse in the mean time stress the fact that we need to identify the true message of buddhism.

Beyond the medical school

Its been two months since i had the good news of my final MBBS results, and now im currently employed as a demonstrator at the same medical faculty i studied. The transition from a medical student to where i stand today had been preety boring and of course uncertain. when i was expecting my entry in to the med school, i always thought that uncertainity will be alien to me, as i was anyway im going to be a doc. however to my dismay uncertainity still prevails. i dont know where ill get my internship , in what discipline?, what am i going to take up in the future. things are so bad right now that internship is not even in the horizon.and about postgraduates things look so grim. life is now in a dead end it seems.

last few weeks : a journey to become a traitor!!!!!!!

The last few weeks in SL have been quite a mess, we had our 6th presidential election and the above mentioned word " traitor" was constant in use. but i do not wish to discuss about that. instead i wish to tell you all about an experience that i myself had to undergo during last 3 weeks in exact.

It is no big seceret that most of sri lankan university student unions are moved by a single political party, and as you can guess even in the one that im also in.......to write about all that ill need a seperate other blog!!!!!!!!!!!

Right exactly two weeks before election, my group mates and i were having a chat leisurely seated in our not so cozy student room in ward22, ( normally we dont have this luxury, but those who have been to ward 22 knows why its different) in coming week, we had two days holiday, and a long weekend (which is also due to election). my friends and myself was making plans to do during that time.some guys from far away places dreamt of staying at home for a couple of days and i was hoping to go out!!!!!!!
Neither of us was aware what was ahead in the next week.....

on monday of the much awaited week,

Talks here and there about a protest, a general academic strike!!!!!!! all appointments postponed!!!!!!!!! havoc in every medical students mind!!!!!!
It all came just like that, out of the blue!!!!!!!
it was against the new private medical college!!!!! NO PMC

As much as i oppose to the New PMC, i disagreed on the strike, but as much as i disagree i accept the fact that everybody has the right to protest, but as much as i agree on that i also believe one has the right not to participate the protest.
I had a long thought, my mind couldnt understand the logic behind the strike, i thought hard, again and again,.........maybe im missing something here..........maybe my mind may not be as sound and sharp as the minds of our leaders!!!!!!!
So i went back to work!!!! so did another 10 students on that day

Havoc again!!!!!! General meetings here and there!!!!!!!! batch meetings!!!!!! suddenly we were at a heated argument.........Being from Galle me and my friends were always outcasts........ we were the bad guys......though we had done nothing to harm any of the others. Infact the local police reports might show who was under constant attack by whom.

The Union always held a personal grudge against us. two weeks before a major exam , couple of galle students were attacked.. we had a simple solution to all this, which we learnt from a great person who walked on this earth, Gandhi, the movement of non cooperation.
we decided not to get involved in anything. We came to learn and we will continue to learn. we will attend practicals , clinicals and ofcourse the lectures like we always did, as the university administration took a stern descision of not to postpone the academic work.

Then came the lies.........the union spread the message that if we were not attending anything uni admins must reschedule !!!!!!!! which the relevant authorities blatantly refused.
Then came aggression!!!!!!! because of you everything is sabotaged. All of a sudden students who are doing the thing which they are supposed to be doing, are SABBOTAGERS!!!!! whats the world coming in to............
Then came the labeling, we were traitors.......we were hands of multinational conspiracy(this one is my personal favourite)

while all of this was happening, the union allowed two appointments to be carried out, which benefited only 48 students.....but in the meantime the numbers grew who abandoned the strike......even some girlfriends of some leaders in the strike attended some lectures.some leaders themselves went to appointments.........NOW WHO ARE TRAITORS

Amidst all this calamity,we kept our cool, we did not engage in heated arguments with anyone !!!!!!! we did not went head hunting!!!!!!! we did not want to increase our numbers!!!!!!!1 it was just that motivation to do better and learn, the same motivation that brought us to this place!!!!!!

Then the union took a descision, that they no longer should keep education at bay, finally they understood that depriving education from their followers was unjust, that students should continue their work as it was the most important thing.so after a hetic three weeks period the strike abruptly ended.

for us!!!!!! we are still the TRAITORS!!!!!!!
but i have one question to my fellow medical students,
didnt we were branded as traitors because we saw something ahead of you?
werent we the traitors because we realized the same thing you realize today three weeks ago?
Is it a crime to see things in future beforehand with simple logic and reasoning?

forum of medial student for discussion

hey,
it has been a while that i have visited my blog. due to my busy shedule since my clinicals began last year, and due to certain other major developments in my life, i had to be away from the blog.
during recent times i always found how difficult it was to use the internet in certain aspects of my clinicals. especially if i search for a disease condition , what normally appears are the sites that gives information of the particular disease,to laymen. Or high advanced researches done by various people, of which we can only read the abstract. Since im full time in to medicine now, i thought of devoting my blog, in the cause of trying to find a solution.

so, the basic aim is to produce patient histories of importance here, and trying to generate a discussion on my blog. so i would be puting up important cases here in my blog, that i would be meeting here in Galle, and along with it a brief discussion.

I would love if my friends in the medical faculties here in galle, srilanka or elsewhere in the world would gather around me in generating a good discussion on the certain aspects of these cases.

if they could help me with the following i would be more than grateful

1. generate a discussion on the particlar patient management with relevant investigations.
2. point out differences in patient management adopted by different consultants and institutions and the logical explanation behind them
3. point out lacks in my history taking and examination
4. also provide similar case histories

so, are you with me in this?

DATA ANALYSIS

A marking scheme was formulated for the questionnaire and marks were allocated to each person participated

o Best acceptable answer - 2 marks.

o Next best answer - 1 mark.

o Unacceptable answer - 0 marks.

Marks obtained plotted against number of students

o Range = 9 - 16

o Mean = 14.01

o Mode = 15

o Median = 14

o Standard deviation = 1.685

Marks plotted against Male and Female student samples

o Male

Mean = 14.52

Standard deviation = 1.22

o Female

Mean = 13.64

Standard deviation = 1.86

o Next using statistical methods we inquired whether the observed difference among male and female was statistically significant or just due to chance.

o A null hypothesis was formed

There is no difference between the male and the female samples regarding mean value obtained in the questionnaire, on healthy practices in food and water consumption

Z= X1 X2

s1² + s2²

n1 n2

Z = 2.8701

Chi square test were applied to certain aspects of the study

o Null hypothesis-

there is no difference between male and female students on the practice of washing hands with soap and water before each meal

o Chi square value obtained = 0.2151

o 0.05 confidence interval = 3.84

o Null hypothesis

There is no significant difference between male and female students in consumption of boiled water for drinking purposes

o Chi square value obtained = 0.326

o 0.05 confidence interval value for a 3×2 contingency table = 5.99

CONCLUSIONS

o The study was associated with two samples in the population, Male students and Female students.

o In overall healthy practices in consumption of food and water, a statistically significant difference between males and females were observed.

o In certain aspects of the study it was observed that there was no significant difference among males and females

Usage of boiled water for drinking purposes

Washing hands with soap and water before meals
